SALVATION

What is sin?

Sin is breaking God’s law or falling short of the standard that God has set.

1) Why Salvation Is Needed

Universality of sin

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

Romans 3:10 … There is no one righteous, not even one…

Proverbs 20: 9 Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?

1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1) Why Salvation Is Needed

GUILTY!

GUILTY!

GUILTY!

GUILTY!

GUILTY!

GUILTY!

Consequences of sin

Romans 6:23 For the wages of Sin is death…

Sin separates us from God because He is holy and sinless.

If you die in your sins you will be eternally separated from God in hell.

1) Why Salvation Is Needed

Rev 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

1) Why Salvation Is Needed

Jesus spoke of a PREPARED PLACE for a PREPARED PEOPLE:

John 14:1-2 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

But Jesus also spoke of a PREPARED PLACE for an UNPREPARED PEOPLE:

Matt 25:41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’

Prov 11:21 Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished…

Isaiah 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.

John 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out - those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

WILL EXCEPTIONS BE MADE?

We cannot be saved by our own good works.

Isaiah 64:6 … all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast.

Titus 3:5… he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.

2) How God Provided Salvation

MAN

GOD

Salvation has to come from God. It is a free gift.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith— and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…

2) How God Provided Salvation

Only God’s Son - Jesus - was sinless.

Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

1 Peter 2:21-22 … Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”

3) Significance Of The Cross

Because our sin deserved punishment and death, Jesus (who was sinless) died in our place as a substitute. He took our punishment!

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 John 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.

3) Significance Of The Cross

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility… 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.… 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

3) Significance Of The Cross

John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

IS EVERYONE A CHILD OF GOD?

I never knew:

Rom 1:18-20 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

COMMON PITFALLS

I’ve lived a good life

Eph 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

I have my own religion:

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

I believe in God:

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

COMMON PITFALLS

We must believe that Jesus can save us.

Rom 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

We must put our faith in Jesus.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Believing in Jesus doesn’t just mean believing that He exists. We saw that even the demons do that. It means putting our trust and hope in Him.

5) How To Receive Salvation

We must admit that we are sinners:

1 John 1:8,10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us… If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

We must confess our sins and ask God to forgive us.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Rom 10:13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

5) How To Receive Salvation

We must repent (i.e. not only be sorry for our sins but turn our back on our sinful life)

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.”

5) How To Receive Salvation

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

GOD WISHES ALL TO BE SAVED

So if God wishes all to be saved, why will many perish?

GOD WISHES ALL TO BE SAVED

God’s gift of salvation is free, but you have the choice to accept it or not.

Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:16-18)

YOUR CHOICE

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” (John 3:36)

YOUR CHOICE

Jesus Christ – the Son of God
