MISSIONS: The prototype Christian church
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 22 July 2018
Acts 11:26 The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

But what were the traits of this prototype church in Antioch where Christians first received their name? Amongst other things, Antioch was the first mission church.

In Antioch, following the prompting of the Holy Spirit, the initiative was taken by a local congregation to launch and support a missionary venture to people beyond its own locale. The gospel had come to Antioch almost accidentally - that is due to Christians migrating there to escape persecution. But following the events in Acts 13 the church in Antioch make the propagation of the gospel a conscious strategy.

The church in Antioch had a mission strategy which included (a) sending and support, (b) praying and fasting and (c) feedback and a home base. And so following the lead of this prototype Christian church, we too should have a conscious missions strategy.

Genesis - A - Why was it written
ENGLISH
Ken Paynter, 20 July 2018
Adam is an important person in the Gospel narrative.
But did he really exist? Was he a historical person or not?

We saw in our last study that taking Genesis literally is foundational to the Gospel and although some professing Christians have ignored this, it is perhaps the main reason why our present western society is immunised against the Gospel message.

Many leading thinkers and writers opposed to the Gospel have cantered their scepticism and criticism of the whole Gospel narrative on precisely this question.

Giving an answer for your Hope
ENGLISH
Ken Paynter, 15 July 2018
1 Peter 3:15 In your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

The Bible presumes that people are going to be asking us about the hope we have. Peter doesn’t say occasionally be prepared in case some people ask you, no, we are always to be prepared for everyone who asks us.

The word translated “give an answer” – is apologia, which is nothing to do with apologising, but instead means: “to make a defence like a lawyer.” Some hear the word “apologetics” and think they’ve got to get a degree before they can talk to others about their Faith and that’s not for them, but Peter says, that being prepared to give an answer is for us all.

James 4:13-16 Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that. As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.

The head of the family is the father. In God’s wisdom he has given each family one head. After all, anything with two heads is a monster!

But this is not a privilege as much as it is a responsibility! The hardest thing a man can ever do is to be a good husband and a good father to his children.

Eli could run the tabernacle but could not bring his sons into order (1 Sam 3:13).
David could run a kingdom but could not control his own children (1 Kings 1:5-6).

Describing the last days, Paul warns in 2 Tim 3:1-5:

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. What was the purpose of John the Baptist’s ministry?
Isaiah 40:3–5 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low;the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together.”

The mouth is the overflow of the heart - Part 1
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 27 May 2018
You cannot bump a glass of water and spill poison:

Rom 3:13 “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.”

James 3:8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Matt 12:33-34 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Jesus is telling us that if poison comes out our mouth, it was in the heart first.

Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Gavin-Paynter/Do-I-have-a-soul-Part6.jpg
Do I have a soul - Part 6
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 29 April 2018
Christian views
1) Pre-existence: Influenced by Plato’s teaching, it holds that souls exist before the creation of the body. God created all human souls at the same time and keeps them in a “warehouse of souls”. At the moment of conception God “attaches” a soul to a person. This view lacks Biblical support.
2) Creationism: God creates a “fresh” soul within each human embryo at or some time shortly after conception.
3) Traducianism: This theory teaches that the soul is created in and with the body by the parents. While God is the ultimate creator of all things, he uses people intermediately or as secondary causes. The soul is in some way generated by way of the act of reproduction and comes into being at the time of conception.
4) Generationism: When a distinction is made between the terms Traducianism and Generationism, the former denotes the materialistic doctrine of the transmission of the soul whereby parents generate from inanimate matter both body and soul of a child.

Q: What does this passage mean?
A: There is disagreement about the meaning of this saying of Jesus. Some options as to what Jesus meant are:

1) Developing good or wrong images in your mind.
2) Being careful what you watch - Jesus is referring to the images we take in visually.
3) Getting our priorities right with regards to money and material possessions.

Ken-Paynter/Which-Jesus-do-you-serve.jpg
Which Jesus do you serve?
ENGLISH
Ken Paynter, 8 April 2018
October 19, 2017 – John Stonestreet   Who is Jesus?
It’s a foundational question, and one many Christians struggle to answer.
In Matthew 16, Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” “Some say John the Baptist,” they replied, “others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But who do you say that I am?”
These days, increasingly odd and just plain wrong answers to the Jesus’ question seem to be floating around everywhere, and churches are one of the easiest places to find them. When you see increasingly unorthodox and innovative ideas about sex, marriage, and the human person coming from religious leaders, you can bet they’re also entertaining increasingly unorthodox and innovative ideas about truth, the Bible, and even God Himself.

Gavin-Paynter/Resurrections-Part2.jpg
Resurrections - Part 2
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 1 April 2018
In 1 Cor 15 the First Resurrection is compared to the planting and harvesting of a crop. Harvesting has 3 parts:
1) It began with the gathering of the firstfruits which were offered as a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God.
2) It proceeded with the general harvest. But not all was taken in this harvest.
3) Some of the crop was left in the field to be gathered by the poor and the needy. This was called the gleanings (Leviticus 19:9-10).

There are also 3 parts to the First Resurrection.
1) Using this imagery, the Bible presents the resurrection of Jesus as the firstfruits of the resurrection of the righteous.
2) The gathering of the Church Age saints, living and dead, at the appearing of the Lord (the Rapture) is thus the general harvest stage of the resurrection of the righteous (Jn 14:1-3 & 1 Thess 4:13-18). 2
3) But there is a third and final stage to this resurrection of the righteous. It is the gleanings, and it occurs at the end of the Tribulation when the Lord’s Second Coming takes place. At that time the Tribulation martyrs (Rev 20:4) will be resurrected.

The importance of Jesus’ resurrection
- The only sign Jesus would give to a wicked generation
- One of the criteria used for apostleship was that the person had to be a witness of the resurrection.
- It was a focal point of the preaching of the early church.
- Belief in it is crucial for salvation
- Necessary for our justification
- Without it, our faith is useless and futile
- Christ’s resurrection is intrinsically linked to ours. If Christ was not raised, then neither are we and vice-versa.

Christian theologians differ on how many components make up the human being.

- One part (Monism) – the view that humans are not composed of various components (i.e. body, soul), but rather as a radical unity.
- Two parts (Dichotomism) - the belief that humans are comprised of a material component (body) and a nonmaterial component (soul, or spirit).
- Three parts (Trichotomism) – holds that humans are comprised of three different elements: body, soul, spirit.

God so loved the world - Part 2
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 25 February 2018
The chorus of the hymn, “The Love of God” goes:

O Love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints and angels song.

When the author F.M. Lehman (1868-1953) tried to write a third verse to the song, the words just wouldn’t fall into place. He then thought of a card he had once received that had on it a poem about the love of God. He searched for the card and soon found it. Lehman read the words on the card and his heart was just as thrilled with the poem as the first time he read it. He began to voice the words of the poem with the melody he had composed for his song. They fit perfectly and he knew he had his third verse to his song.

Lehman noticed at the bottom of the card some smaller but heavier printing. It told the story of the origin of the poem. It was found written on a prison wall some 200 years earlier. It wasn’t known why the prisoner was incarcerated; nor if the words were original or if he had heard them elsewhere. Whatever the circumstances, he had written them on the wall of his prison cell. That third stanza goes:

Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Scripture often employs the imagery of blindness to describe the spiritual condition of persons who are either unable or unwilling to perceive divine revelation.

The things of God are perceived not by observation and inquiry, but by revelation and illumination.

Matt 11:25-27 At that time Jesus said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Matt 6:25-34 Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these...

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

2) Suffering teaches us to rely on God, not on self.
3) In our weakness, we discover that God is strong.
4) Deepens our relationship with Jesus.
5) In suffering we learn to function as a body
6) It is often a means of achieving God’s greater purposes.
7) We learn obedience when suffering.

Buddhism sees suffering as inevitable and without purpose. To escape it, we must cease to exist.

In contrast, Christianity sees suffering as inevitable, but as serving a divine purpose.

1) Suffering is used by God as a form of discipline.
2) Sometimes suffering enables us to be used as a vessel for God’s glory.
3) Suffering may be a test of our integrity.
4) Trials refine our faith.
5) God uses suffering to develop our character.

The Bible acknowledges the issue of suffering as part of the human condition.

The book of Job, one of the longer books in the Bible, is dedicated solely to the question of suffering. Likewise the books of Jeremiah and Habakkuk have much to say about it. Much of 1 Peter and Hebrews is about the suffering and persecution of Christians. Many of Paul’s letters were written from prison. About one third of the Psalms, the prayers of the OT, are cries that arise out of doubt, disappointment, or pain.

There is more information about this period of time in the Bible than any other – including the gospel period. The name Hosea means, salvation, or He saves or He helps (important to bear in mind among the judgement aspects of the book).

Hosea ministers in the time of the divided kingdom. He ministers to the northern kingdom. The northern kingdom had a problem with people travelling south to worship at the temple – so idol worship was encouraged. He is the last prophet to the northern kingdom and fulfils a role similar to Jeremiah in the south.

Hosea famously used his marriage as an illustration to demonstrate the people’s unfaithfulness.

While Haman had wanted revenge on the Jews, he also wanted to profit from it. The first law that Haman got passed allowed for looting of the Jews’ property (Est 3:13), similar to the looting of Jewish property by the Nazis.

The attitude of the Jews is contrasted here. The second edict allowed them to “to plunder the property of their enemies” (Est 8:11), yet they did not. But why not? Why did they not take what was rightfully theirs legally?

Any Christian who is not on their guard can be deceived.

2 Cor 11:3-4 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

Do I have a soul - Part 4
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 1 October 2017
Christian theologians differ on how many components make up the human being.
- One part (Monism) – the view that humans are not composed of various components (i.e. body, soul), but rather as a radical unity.
- Two parts (Dichotomism) - the belief that humans are comprised of a material component (body) and a nonmaterial component (soul, or spirit).
- Three parts (Trichotomism) – holds that humans are comprised of three different elements: body, soul, spirit.

Dualism is the traditional Christian view… that the human being is made up of 2 components: material (body/flesh) and spiritual (soul/spirit). The soul or spirit departs from the body at death, and will be reunited with the body at the resurrection.

We will examine the following claims by Monists:
- Their view is closer to that of the Hebrew OT and Dichotomism and Trichotomism are derived from Greek philosophy.
- The Bible doesn’t teach that man has a separate eternal soul and the Hebrew word translated as “spirit” (ruach) simply means “breath”.
- Soul sleep: The soul/spirit dies when the body dies. Or alternatively the soul sleeps - there is no consciousness.
- Monism appears to be more consistent with modern neuroscience.
- The unrighteous soul will cease to exist instead of suffering eternally (annihilationism).

If you don’t think that unity is vital, consider this.

- Jesus prayed for unity.
John 17:11 & 20-23. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.... My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,  that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one, I in them and you in me, so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

2 Samuel 9 (KJV) 1And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake? 2And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. 3And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.

5Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar. 6Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! 7And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

Count the cost
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 27 August 2017
For many in the West, being a Christian may seem to have little or no cost at all. To a lot of South Africans, being a Christian means little more than ticking a box on their census form (what we call “none of the above” Christians). That’s why about 80% of South Africans claim to be Christians, but only about 56% say they attend church regularly (at least once a week).

To make things worse, in our Western society some have tried to cheapen the cost of discipleship in order to entice people and draw in the crowds. We live in the age where preachers are told to have “seeker-sensitive” churches, where the church is viewed as a business and the congregation as consumers.

As consumers must be given what they want, God needs to be presented as ‘consumer-friendly’. Most ‘consumers’ want to be made to feel comfortable and ‘positive’ - even if they haven’t repented. And so God is presented as a nice grandfather, whose main concern is to make you happy. We talk exclusively of God’s love and avoid any mention of his holiness and justice.

Slavery
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 13 August 2017
Collins Concise English Dictionary defines a slave as follows:
- a person legally owned by another and having no freedom of action or right to property
- a person who is forced to work for another against his will.

Collins Concise English Dictionary also defines a slave as follows:
- a person under the domination of another person or some habit or influence.

BIBLICAL DEFINITION OF A SLAVE:
… a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. (2 Pet 2:19)
“…everyone who sins is a slave to sin…” (John 8:34 )

Moses, who was a type of Jesus, was called by God to be his instrument to free his people from slavery. Jesus purchased freedom for those who were enslaved by sin. In the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus said that he came “to preach deliverance to the captives” (Luke 4:18 KJV).

Gavin-Paynter/Calvinism-Part7b-Apostasy-and-backsliding.jpg
Calvinism - Part 7b - Backsliders and Apostates
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 6 August 2017
Last time we saw that it is possible for someone who was a true believer to fall away. Our faith can be shipwrecked.

1 Tim 1:19 … holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.

This next question to consider is whether it is possible for such a person to be restored. This will bring us to the concepts of a backslider versus an apostate.

The Bible differentiates between those who fall away and are brought back (which for the sake of simplicity we’ll refer to as backsliding) and those who cannot be brought back to repentance (which we’ll refer to as apostasy).

Caution: The terms “apostate” and “backslider” are viewed as synonymous by KJV and NASB translators. While the KJV translates passages using the Hebrew word “meshuvah” as “backslide”, the NASB uses the term “apostasy” or “faithless” as an equivalent.

But as the Bible clearly identifies two classes of those who fall away, we’ll stick to using the term “backslider” and “apostate” when making these distinctions – even though this distinction is not made by translators. The distinction is determined by the context.

God's will and our desires - Part 9

Ken Paynter, 30 July 2017
To a great extent, it is our human conscience that defines who we are. Morals and moral codes are not enough to keep humans on the right path. Not even the law can do that all the time.
Only conscience stops a man from stealing something in the dark when no one else is looking.
Without human conscience, many researchers into the field argue that the behaviours of human beings would become practically unpredictable.
The boundaries between actions that are rational and those that are not would become blurred and there would be nothing to hold us back from whatever action we contemplate, be it right or wrong.

The true identity of Jesus Christ is more important to our eternal destiny than any other single factor.

Matthew 16:13-18 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
And I tell you that you are Peter (PETROS), and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it”.

Gavin-Paynter/Calvinism-Part7a-Perseverance-of-the-Saints.jpg
Calvinism - Part 7a - Perseverance of the Saints
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 9 July 2017
Calvinists believe in the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints (Eternal Security or Once-Saved-Always-Saved), which says that those whom God has called can never fall away. Because God chose some to be saved, he keeps them from apostasy and those who do apostatize were never truly born again.

Arminians believe that salvation is secure in Christ and protected from all external forces, but it is conditional on us remaining in Christ and it can be lost through apostasy. Salvation is conditioned on faith, therefore perseverance is also conditional. Apostasy (turning from Christ) can be committed through a deliberate, willful rejection of Jesus and renouncement of previous faith.

Can you imagine the following conversation taking place with a sane person?
A: Did you hear? John fell off the roof.
B: Oh dear, Was he hurt?
A: Not really – he never was truly on the roof.
B: But I thought you said he fell off the roof?
A: Yes, but the fact that he fell off the roof proves that he was never really on the roof in the first place.

If this line of reasoning sounds stupid to you, chances are you’re an Arminian.

Knowing Jesus isn’t about Church attendance, hearing or reading about him or even seeing him.

Luke 13:23-28 Someone asked him, Lord, are only a few people going to be saved? He said to them, Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, Sir, open the door for us. But he will answer, I don’t know you or where you come from. Then you will say, We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets. But he will reply, I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers! There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.

Christians at work - Part 1
ENGLISH
Gavin Paynter, 26 June 2017

Adam and Eve worked – so work was part of God’s plan for mankind even before the Fall.
Contrary to popular belief, the need for man to work is not part of the curse. It is true that the ground was cursed and man was told that he would have to work hard to survive in the world:
But before the Fall or the Curse, man had already been given work:
Gen 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
So the oldest profession is actually gardening or farming.
The point is though that Adam and Eve were not just sitting around in the garden all day eating fruit and ‘loafing’ – they were placed in the garden “to work it and take care of it”.

He is also foreshadowed.
He is often mistaken for someone who is merely foreshadowing him.
